Keychain Access: Lock Keychain Login Greyed Out

I have a Late 2015 iMac running macOS Monterey, Version 12.7.5. I rebooted the computer and had a Proton Mail Bridge Update pop up to be installed. It caught me off gaurd, but I continued with the update. My issue is not with the Bridge update. I lost all my email passwords in Outlook. They were stored in Keychain Access. Since I had not entered the pass words in years, I went to my network drive to get an encrypted file with the passwords. I could not access the drive. I had to sign into the drive. That password was in Keychain as well. As I signed into my email accounts and network drive, I saved the passwords in Keychain. Later, I realized I could not send SMS Text from Message. I can receive SMS. I can send and receive iMessage texts. Many of the troubleshooting articles I read suggest to Lock the Keychain and then unlock it a few minutes later. I cannot lock it since the Lock Keychain Login is greyed out. Another person suggested creating a second login, changing it to Default, then change back to the original Login and delete the second login. I can create a second login, but I cannot find anywhere how to change it to Default. Everything worked fine until I installed the update. I believe the update corrupted Keychain Access. Thank you for your help.

If you need to update your keychain password on Mac

Your login keychain password is normally the same as your user password (the password you use to log in to the computer). At login, if your keychain password somehow differs from your user password, it doesn’t automatically unlock, and you’re asked to enter the keychain’s password. It’s recommended that you enter your previous user password. If this doesn’t unlock the keychain, the keychain automatically resets.

If you don’t remember your previous user password, you need to reset your default keychain. Resetting the default keychain deletes all the passwords saved in the keychain, but lets you sync your login password and the password stored in the keychain.

To do this, change your password in Users & Groups preferences, and the keychain password is automatically changed to match it.

Note: It’s recommended that you manually reset your keychain only when advised to by Apple Support. Resetting default keychains requires you to log out and log back in to your Mac to complete the process.

  1. In the Keychain Access app  on your Mac, choose Keychain Access > Preferences.
  2. Click Reset Default Keychains.
  3. Choose Apple menu  > Log Out. When you log in again, save your current login password in a keychain.

If your user password was reset because you forgot your password, and you can’t provide the old password for the keychain, you won’t be able to access the information in the old keychain, and a new blank keychain is created.

Have you run Disk Utility's Disk First Aid on all connected drives?

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

First an update. I tried to fix the iMac Message app through other means instead of focusing on the Keychain Access. I have two iPhone SE Model 2’s running iOS 17.5.1. I exhausted many troubleshooting guides and could not solve the problem. I took both phones side by side and went through the Message settings. I got to “Text Message Forwarding”. My iMac was unchecked on both of them. I moved the slider to on or green. The Message app on the iMac started working. I am the only one that has access to the phone and I did not change the settings. I am baffled by this, but I can now send and receive both SMS and iMessages, so I will take this as a win. That part of my problem is solved. I still want to get the problem with "Lock Keychain Login greyed out" fixed. I want the ability to lock Keychain if needed.

I ran the Disk Utility all drives. All the drives were successful except my attached WD Passport. The first check on the Passport was successful. The downstream checks on the Passport failed. The error said the “disc was mounted”. The Passport works fine. I use it for Time Machine.

I am running a VPN, Virus Software, and a Cleaning App. I would rather not type the names here. You can see them in the report. You will see a Kaspersky file. I do not use that app anymore. I unistalled Kaspersky using the app's uninstaller. I was surprised to see the file still on the drive.

Below is the Etrechek Report.

Thank you for your help. Let me know if you need further information.

I got this response from ProtonMail. I thought it might be useful.

Thank you for the follow-up.

Proton Mail Bridge uses the official macOS frameworks and APIs to access the Keychain and read/write data into it. We can only access a specific item within the keychain which is required for Bridge to work, we do not touch other items.

Furthermore, as per the logs we can see that Bridge 3.12 was launched twice without any issues. Then, on the third launch, we can see a keychain issue in Bridge logs as well.

Per our investigation, this issue is not related to Proton Mail Bridge, and as we can see Bridge was also affected by the issue (which is why you were required to re-enter the credentials).

You can look into some tools Apple provides for scanning your device to ensure there are no further issues. This can include running a disk check and scanning for viruses.

My virus software is not showing any issues. I will run a scan to make sure. Thanks again.

Delete these files & restart...

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.installer.cleanupinstaller.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.kaspersky.sysextctrld.plist

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.microsoft.update.agent.plist

And unless somebody is twising your arm, I'd uninstall VPN, Virus Software, and a Cleaning App.

Most installers leave crude, AV apps are the worst.

Thre is a slim possiblity that there could be a different result between another Admin Account & a brand new Admin account.

More of my notes on it...

Accountsd asking you often…

Just open the "Keychain Access", click right on the "login" keychain in the sidebar, select "Change settings for Keychain "login"" and unselect both options "Lock after ..." and "Lock when sleeping". – Tom Kraina Sep 8 '16 at 10:55

If your Mac keeps asking for the login keychain password

The password of your macOS user account might not match the password of your login keychain. Either create a new login keychain or update it with your new password.

I removed the files in your post. I know that AV software is not a necessity on a Mac. I installed for a feature that was on the Windows version, but not the Mac version. I uninstalled using the app’s uninstaller. I uninstalled Ccleaner also. I went back and checked the LaunchDaemons and the Ccleaner “plist” was still there. I removed that file also. Sorry, I am keeping the VPN. I rebooted the computer and let it load up. The “Lock Keychain Login” is still greyed out. Thank you for your continued help.

I recieved an email that BDAqua sent me with the instructions from Apple Support page about resetting the password on Users and Groups and Resetting the Default Keychains. The instructions in the email did not show up in this discussion. The link for the instructions is at the bottom of this post (above the picture) if anyone else is following this post.

I reset my User Password. Then I reset the Default Keychains and logged out of my computer annd logged back in. Unfortunately, this did not correct the problem. I am new to this post and did not realize I could insert a picture. Below is a screen shot of the problem. Thank you for your continued help.

Thank you for this information. I have a second Admin account already. I will check in the morning and post the results tomorrow. When I search the internet about this problem, there is next to nothing. I have been working with Proton Mail about their app. It appears to be deleting the same 4 passwords from Keychain every time I login into the app. I came up with a way to prove or disprove my theory.

When you gave me an up arrow on my previous comment, the email said 144 people viewed this post. I am extending an invitation for someone to chime if you have any further information. Thank you.

I logged out and tried my existing second admin account. It did not work, so I created another new admin (third) account. I had the same issue with both accounts. I opened Keychain Access and the left-hand Sidebar appeared to be greyed out. I had a weird default background so I changed it. I do believe the sidebar was greyed out. I could click on the items such as “Login” and it would highlight. When I right clicked, nothing. I did not get the menu choices as in the picture I posted above. I verified that the test account had admin rights and it did. Strangely, I could click on a password and it opened up in a separate box. I clicked “Show Password, entered my admin password, and the password displayed.

I did review how to reload the OS. At this point, I not comfortable reloading it. I know it will be a gamble. Unless you want me to try something else, I think we hit the end of the road. I am very thankful for your efforts.

I am fortunate, the computer works fine, I just cannot lock Keychain Access. I am going to move forward on a new computer so I can be up to date with the new software as Apple no longer supports my computer.
