How to redeem your offer.

To redeem the offer for iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, set up your new device. To redeem the offer for AirPods, HomePod, or Beats headphones or speakers, connect or pair your eligible device to an iPhone or iPad running the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. To redeem the offer for Apple Watch, connect or pair your eligible device to an iPhone running the latest version of iOS.

 After setting up or pairing your new device, open the Apple Music app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.

The offer should be presented immediately after launching the app. If not, go to the Home tab where it will appear.

Tap "Accept Now."

As I thought might be the case, the offer is for "New subscribers only (see fine print at the bottom of the page).

Was there a free three month access promotion?

Even if there was, the terms and conditions probably said that the free access was for new subscribers only. Any free trials that you got with previous Apple device purchases, and used, would likely have counted as previous subscriptions for the purpose of not getting more free trial time.
