Validation of new AppleCard replacing the one that expired

Apple sent me a replacement for the one that expires tomorrow. The method of validation of the new card, as stated by Apple is to hold your iPhone next to it. IT DOES NOT WORK!

Spent an hour waiting online for AppleCard support -- no one seems to be available (consistent with my 30 years experience with Apple...)

Is there any advice on how to achieve the validation?

Please contact an Apple Card Specialist at Goldman Sachs Bank concerning activating your physical card. Please note that the virtual card in your Apple Wallet does not need activating or updating. Goldman Sachs updates those automatically as needed.

When I received my replacement card I held my iPhone near the packaging holding the card as instructed on the packaging, it would not activate, I tried several times.

What did work was that I went to the Wallet on my phone and there was a notification that said "Activate Your Card" or something similar, I tapped on it and my replacement Apple Card was then activated.
