Formatting MacBook Pro 2015:
I. Back Up, First:
Backup your Mac (if an option), so that nothing is lost.
II. Format Anew to APFS:
Yes. Monterey uses APFS. As for using an external drive, export files on it (so that nothing is lost), then erase the drive, and then format it to APFS. Boot into Recovery Mode to perform this (Intel or Silicon).
III. While in Recover Mode:
Use Time Machine - and not a third party app. You would....
- Open: Disk Utility***
- Mount: the drive (if "Unmount" shows)
- Erase: the drive
- Format: with APFS format
***To Open Disk Utility: Boot in to Recovery Mode > Go to: Applications > Utilities
