Pages file size is very large compared to exported docx

I just wrote a document of about 500 words, all text, in Pages 11.1. I exported to Excel docx format. The latter is 10kB while the Pages file is 290kB. I thought maybe the latter includes the entire edit history for Undo purposes, but that doesn't seem to be it. Why so big?

You exported your Pages content from Pages v11.1 to a Word docx document. You can expect Pages documents to be much larger than the exported Word documents because their internal organization is entirely different and Pages translates its content to the Word format.

Several years ago, when one would enter a sole character in a blank Pages document the document size would be close to 500 KB. Now, using Pages v14.1 on Sonoma 14.6, that same document is 90 KB.

I have a Pages document here with an indicated 438 words and an inserted Jacobian equation that is 946 KB. Exported to Word produces a 57 KB document.
