MacBook Pro not charging when connected to the studio display

My MacBook Pro is plugged into a power source but it will not charge when also connected to the studio display monitor. If the battery runs low I have to stop working to disconnect the monitor and leave the MacBook to charge for a while (or work off the laptop). It used to be fine, and also I could connect the display and laptop for power but no luck with this anymore. It is so frustrating. I have tried changing the power mode and other suggestions but it doesn’t resolve.

We would all like to have MacBooks use ALL the connected power sources, but electrically, that is very difficult.

Apple says it will use the "best" but leaves that term undefined. Users report that it typically connects to the FIRST-connected power-source, and if that is adequate, stays with that one and ignores power sources added later.

To the the higher output from the power adapter, connect the power adapter first, and connect the display slightly later.

When you close the lid on the display, that sends a command to MacOS for your Mac to go to sleep. Of course the display goes dark.

The very narrow set of supported conditions for being awake when the lid is closed have always been a bit dicey.

MacBook Pro 14 2023 model, connects to a USB-C cord. Have tried connecting power source from studio display to the MacBook as well, makes no difference. It will not charge unless disconnected from the display. The MacBook also has to be open when connected to the display, if I close it the screen goes black. Again, this didn’t use to be a problem. Nothing has changed at home in terms of the power supply or set-up.
