When I hit return for a new line it goes 1.5 to twice the vertical space that I used to have. What did I touch or need to do to get regular vertical spacing back again.

Select the text you want to adjust and click the Format icon, to the right of the toolbar. A sidebar will open (on the right); near the top select Style, then go down and click the ">" symbol next to Spacing. "Lines" and its options controls what happens as you type and the cursor moves to another line, while the Before and After paragraph determines what happens when you hit Return.
If you don't select any text, this will control new text that you type in, from where ever your cursor is.
