Does Apple Pay share location data with issuers?

Hello All,

Apple says: “Card-related information, location, and information about device settings and use patterns may be sent to Apple and may be used together with account information to provide assessments to your card issuer or payment network to set up Apple Pay and prevent transaction fraud.”

Do you know if the issuer receives the location, antifraud assesment, or both?

Thanks.

Yes, Apple can provide the location, but in most cases is assisted GPS. Assisted GPS uses public WiFi information and cellular data from nearest tower. This can result in location errors when the WiFi is through a VPN. Bottom line, it’s not 100% accurate. Device owners can turn off location services and Apple Pay will still function. It’s at bank’s discretion whether to approve a transaction or not.

Fraud analysis score is only provided when the card is initially added to Apple Wallet and verified by the bank for use with Apple Pay.

Each bank that verifies their payment method and account owner uses their own custom algorithm for fraud detection and prevention. Banks are sent only the specific information they request, as long as it’s within Apple’s privacy policy.

What is the source of the information you quoted? If I can see the context for it, I may be able to provide more details.
