If you can not see messages on your watch from 3rd party message apps, for example WhatsApp, make sure that on your iPhone in the WatchApp, under Settings/Notifications/Mirror notifications from iPhone/ this messenger app is enabled.

If is no 3rd party app, check WatchApp/Settings/Messages -> mirror iPhone
