I could not updated operating system on my 2019 MacBook. Air - it was stuck for over a week. So attempted to reset hard drive. I guess I’ve erased everything because now I’m stuck with a file icon with a ? I have tried command R and all the other suggestions. I need to know if this can be fixed or does this mean I’m screwed and need a new computer.

Try using Command + Option + R to attempt to boot into Internet Recovery Mode instead.
