I've just made an online purchase on my MacBook using a credit card stored in my Apple Wallet.
In the email I received confirming the purchase, the last 4 digits of the card were shown as the actual physical card number and not the unique last 4 digits associated with the device.
Can you explain why that should be?

This is unusual. Are you using Safari as your web browser or another browser? The regular number is not stored on the iPhone or Secure Element on a MacBook. Only encrypted data. The bank would have the key and so would Payment Network Operator (Visa, MasterCard). In theory the merchants credit card processor might also have the key.
Did you enter the full 16 digit account number of your card into the website or use the card that showed in the autofill feature of Safari?

I most definitely used Apple Pay as I mentioned previously, authorising with Touch ID on my keyboard.
The other weird thing is that when I checked my MacBooks Apple Wallet that recent payment is not shown, so I have no idea what happened, will have to check what happens with other purchases in the future.

Thanks, I selected the Apple Pay icon on the website, Apple Pay opened to my default credit card, I authorised with Touch ID, the payment completed normally 🤷♂️.
