.CR3 Files / Monterey / August 2024 - Still Not Visible in Preview!

Hi,

I've been tracking this topic for ages now and there still seems to be no clear fix or result, which is angering me beyond belief. I'm looking at upgrading my Mac and this alone is pushing me towards becoming a PC User.

Does ANYBODY know of a way to update Preview to be able to Preview .CR3 files from a Canon R6 ii Body?

I'm not keen on 3rd party apps, or downloading an editing program in order to be able to see the contents of a folder. Are there ANY fixes to this? Seems its been complained about for years now about various different camera bodys!

iMac 27″, macOS 12.7

Apple supports the Canon EOS R6 ii in macOS Ventura 13.6.8 and Sonoma 14.6. These RAW images are visible as Finder icons and properly open in Quick Look and Preview.

Apple does not, however, make any specific camera RAW support retroactive to earlier operating systems such as macOS Monterey where this particular camera is not supported.

Upgrade to Sonoma where QuickLook and Preview.app support Canon EOS R6 Mark II samples from this page:

In the past some macOS versions had camera raw updates but nowadays those updates are bundled with the macOS updates/upgrades. I myself used for a while Adobe DNG converter when waiting R5 raw support.

...if I was in a hurry and wanted to make sure macOS supports the Camera's raw, I'd take test shots in the store and check them before buying...

This morning, I checked the System Info for Camera RAW on Monterey 12.7.6. It shows the EOS R6 Mark II supported. Unfortunately, downloaded RAW files for this camera model do not appear as Finder icons, Quick Look, or in Preview.

A few years ago in Photos forum there were reports that some macOS update should have had raw support for some camera but it did not work ... but after a while it then miraculously started working. Maybe a reboot, a detour to safe boot or some other voodoo explained that.

Then some cameras might have extra raw settings (like compression etc?) that the macOS raw does not support.

" Preview Fix " to handle .CR3 files created by Canon is the successor of the .CR2 which was also created by Canon - right ?

Preview is a basic application that can handle various imagine file formats and to a certain extent, can handle .PDF files which is created by Adobe

I think is more realistic, not to expect Apple to incorporate every single Third Party Image file formats into a Basic image / pdf Application like Preview

Unfortunately, you may be required using some Third Party Software, perhaps from Canon, in order to get full access to the .CR3 Files created by this camera
