Not easier, but there is a difference. The port on the 6th generation is actual Thunderbolt 3, the port on the 4th generation is not. If the port on the Thunderbolt station expects a Thunderbolt signal the 4th gen won’t provide it. So the display is likely not going to work. On the 4th generation, you will need an adapter: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple and connect to the HDMI port on the monitor.

The monitor like the dock expects a Thunderbolt signal through the Thunderbolt port which the 4th generation iPad Pro does not provide.

Depends on the cable and the monitor.

If its a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 (usb-c) and the monitor has a USB-C port, then just plug the cable straight into the monitor and into the iPads charging port.

If that does not work for you, then clarify the following:

  1. Model of iPad Pro or wether it’s Lightning or USB-C equipped
  2. Inputs the monitor has or the specific model of Dell monitor.
  3. type of Thunderbolt cable. (1,2,3 or 4) or at least the style of connector it has.

Thank you!

  1. iPad Pro 12.9 4th generation with USB-C port. I also have an iPad 12.9 6th generation as well if you think that would be an easier answer to the issue.
  2. My monitor is a Dell UP2720Q and has thunderbolt, DPD and HDMI ports. The HDMI port is used to connect to my Thunderbolt docking station.
  3. I have tried a direct connect using a Dell Thunderbolt 3 and Apple Thunderbolt cable (which does not have a number on it), but neither provide a connection.

thank you again!
