I have a 27" iMac A1312 (Mid 2010) running High Sierra (latest possible) and want to use it as the screen for my Apple TV. I've tried connecting it via HDMI<->Firewire cable but nothing happens. Can it possibly work? If so, how?

Unfortunately there is no possibility to use iMac as Apple TV display.

The Apple TV app on your iMac can do everything the Apple TV box can. In addition you can either download or use the websites of your various streaming subscriptions to view their contents.
In addition there are 27” HDTVs out there for less than $100 these days.
It will not work. A Mac isn’t able to use HDMI for input.
iMacs are computers, they are not external displays for other devices including other computers, Apple TV's, etc...
Is it possible to connect my Apple TV to an older 27” iMac (Mid 2010) running High Sierra?
