Apple Mail very slow on downloading and moving messages High Sierra

Apple Mail is running very slow to download messages, moving messages, moving messages to trash etc. In the lower left hand corner of the app the 'Downloading', 'moving' activity seems to last for hours. There is a lag with most operations though sending and receiving still function well enough.

I have tried a Rebuild in the Mailbox menu as well as the usual Disk repair and Safe Start.

I am using Apple Mail Version 11.5 (3445.9.7) in High Sierra Mac Pro (Early 2009) 2 x 3.06 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon 28 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.

I don't use Imap for any of the email accounts in Apple Mail, they are all setup as POP.

Any insights would be helpful.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

Method 1:

1 From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.

2 In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

Or…

Use the Command-Shift-period

Run etrecheck again.

Hello BDAqua, Many thanks for this.

So far it appears to have resolved the issue as well as possibly increasing the responsiveness of a few other processes. Really so very helpful. Thank you.

I'll monitor things over the coming week or so and hopefully see things continuing to run better.

Wish I'd engaged here sooner as it was a very frustrating issue. Best wishes to you.
