Alternatives to CleanMyMac for RAM Swap & disk cleaning?

As a result of advice given me in this thread: MacBook Pro 13" M1 2020 can't upgrade fro… - Apple Community I had Clean My Mac uninstall itself. Turned out that did not resolve the issue. I did get advice there re alternatives for malware protection but actually, as noted in that other discussion, I have especially appreciated CMM for the RAM Swap feature, as well as clearing my disk of unnecessary "junk" – about which I'm pretty clueless but I trust it is doing that. So I'm considering reinstalling CMM, especially for those features. I still have a month or two left on my current subscription and given the negativity toward CMM expressed by two responders in that other post, I would like to learn what more folks have to say about this. Are there better alternatives for those particular features? Ideally such alternatives would include similar security features.

The absolute worst "feature" you could bring back is RAM swapping. The OS already does that itself as necessary. There's no possible way a third party vendor would know better than Apple what the most efficient way to do that is.

All security you could possibly need is built into the OS. Third party apps add nothing. There are no viruses that can affect macOS. Trojans go right past AV software since they can't know what it is you're installing and/or running until after the fact. The entire System folder is cryptographically sealed. There is no malware of any kind that can alter one bit of it.

Is it possible to make a mess of your computer? Sure, by installing Trojans that place themselves in your user account. But that also makes them relatively easy to remove.

Other than that, there is no protection of any kind for believing scam emails, messages or popups that claim you have 38 viruses and to call some scammer's phone number. Or, an email or message that claims they have naughty video of you (or more recently, claim to have installed Pegasus on your device). But don't worry! For the sum of some randomly chosen amount of Bitcoin money they tell you to send, they'll make it all go away.

The only protection against such social engineering is yourself.

Before going any further, it is worth noting that merely uninstalling non-Apple "cleaning" scams is insufficient to reverse or undo the effects of having used them. It has been my experience that nothing short of completely erasing the affected Mac is required.

Now, please start from the beginning and describe the problem you are experiencing. RAM Swap is not sufficient explanation since memory contents of memory are routinely and constantly being swapped in and out of mass storage, and Mac disks do not require and cannot benefit from "cleaning".

Be prepared to erase the Mac though, since "cleaning" apps are destructive in nature. It's what they do. They are scams.

Plenty of people are running Big Sur in 8 GB RAM. It is not an abundant amount, but it is more than sufficient.

Gave me the impression that there is continuous buildup of junk from just using the internet.

Of course it did. That's how those scams work.

It stands to reason all my Macs have accumulated the same buildup of junk. They work fine.

I reiterate your problems are almost certainly 100% attributable to using "CleanMyMac". Erase the Mac. Reconfigure it. Upgrade macOS if you wish. It will work fine.

Well, you're right – I failed to follow Old Toad's advice from that previous discussion and just now used EasyFind (which I've had installed for a long time now and love it) to search for < macpaw > as Old Toad suggested. Found several files, selected them all, moved to Trash and emptied Trash. So I guess that's as clean as I may get – ? Can't do much more about having used CMM without going drastic, which I'm not currently prepared to do.

Perhaps I've been scammed by CMM's purporting to do RAM Swap and cleaning my disk space – ? Gave me the impression that there is continuous buildup of junk from just using the internet. As for the RAM Swap – with just 8 GB RAM on my MacBook Pro, it would give me alerts about RAM limitations (when a few apps are open) w option to Quit the largest current RAM hog, along with RAM SWAP, which I've always elected to do. I have no idea what it's doing, have just trusted that it was helping me with limited RAM.

So, if cleaning programs are apparently so dastardly, is there anything else I can do to "optimize" my MacBook and help compensate for the RAM limitations? Perhaps I should submit a different query about this.

Kurt, love that reply, esp last line!!! ;-) But the detail in your msg just saved me another query I was going to post, thinking I needed to rephrase my question.

Viruses, malware, etc have been my least concern, partly because of Apple's rep, but also, just by nature I tend to avoid circumstances that invite such trouble. My greatest concern has been my RAM limitations – it seems most apps are using increasing amts of RAM these days – I often have Activity Monitor open to watch this.

I recently subscribed to Adobe Creative Suites on a one-year discount deal. Until about a year ago I had moved an old version of CS5 from one MacBook to the next until that was no longer feasible ( I only needed it sporadically). I subscribed recently primarily for Acrobat and Illustrator. Haven't even begun using Illustrator yet but that always was a RAM hog. Now I'm floored at how much RAM even Acrobat is using. So I'm very concerned that I will have to shut down all other apps once I begin using Illustrator.

But I take it from you that Mac has me covered on the RAM issue. So many thanks, Kurt!
