How can I turn off automatic text replacement?

In Safari, I want to comment out some html code for a website. When I type --> it will always get replaced with an arrow. Obviously the code will not work this way.

I have already de-selected automatic text replacement but it still gets replaced.

How can I do that?

That might be the most plausable explanation. It's a custom text field in Views, although as plain text. I can't figure out the root cause for certain.

For now, I'll remove that part and save it as a snippet instead of commenting it out. (I'll just have to remember next time working on it... :D )

I knew what you meant about the replacement menu.

I know that the FiraCode font will collapse HTML comment dashes into a contiguous em-dash but that does not interfere with the comment functionality.

Or, you have an extension added to Safari that may be impacting this text string. Beyond these, I am out of suggestions.
