You are correct that you cannot change your Apple ID to your primary email address. Your Apple ID can be changed to any other email address that is not already associated with an Apple ID.

Changing your Apple ID email address using this method will not change your primary iCloud email address. In fact your primary email address cannot be changed at all. Personally I would recommend not using an Apple/iCloud email address as your Apple ID, because if you get locked out of your account for any reason, you will not be able to access that email address to reset your password. Check with your internet provider to see if they offer an email address that you can create. The Apple ID email is easy to change if you happen to change your internet provider and you do not need to use that email for any reason other than to access your Apple account.

You can't migrate purchases from one Apple ID to another.

You get one primary email account with your Apple ID, but can also add up to 3 email accounts. Each of these are independent email accounts and there is no need to create a new Apple ID.

Your Apple ID and your iCloud.com email address are not necessarily the same. I have a Gmail address as an Apple ID and an iCloud.com email address. Is that what your setup looks like? If so, I don't believe you can change the Apple ID to the iCloud.com address if that's what you're asking to do. I seem to remember there used to be documentation on this. However, all it currently says is that you can't change your Apple ID to an iCloud ID that was created within the last 30 days.

If you are getting rid of the Gmail address, you can change your Apple ID to another non-iCloud email. Or, just leave the Gmail account active so that you can use it if you ever need to get notifications about your Apple ID and give people the iCloud.com email to contact you.

Create a new AppleID and tell all of your friends that that's the one that they need to contact.
