Hello,

While AirTag is designed to track items, not people or pets, you may still be able to locate your cat using it.

You can skip to the "Locate an item" section of the video below for a quick guide.

If you need more help, check out this guide: Locate an AirTag or other item in Find My on iPhone - Apple Support.

Make sure you also file a missing animal report with your local animal shelter or similar agency.

Hope this helps.

The tag's "location" would appear on the Items tab in the Find My app on your iPhone. If you are not seeing location updates, it is because there are no other iPhones within Bluetooth range (~30-40') of the tag to relay the tag's ID + the phone's GPS location to the Apple servers over the Internet.

Since your cat is mobile, it may be difficult for an iPhone to be within range when the tag broadcasts its signal. Which typically happens every 3-5 mins.

Hello~ It is not recommended to use an AirTag on any pet. AirTags are Bluetooth trackers and don’t have GPS functionality needed for tracking or finding a pet. Their effectiveness is limited to situations where a compatible device is nearby to pick up the signal. I hope you find your cat and if so have it microchipped or speak with your veterinarian about a proper GPS tracking device. Take care.

The problem with using an AirTag on an animal, other then the possibility that they could eat it, is that the AirTag is just like the other Bluetooth trackers that require another device nearby (usually about 30 feet) to be able to transmit the location. An animal that runs off where there is not another iPhone within that range will be unable to be located.

There is a difference between Bluetooth trackers and GPS trackers. The GPS tracker maintains a connection to a satellite when it has an unobstructed view of the sky and does not need another device to transmit the location. There are downfalls to GPS trackers too, such as:

  • They are larger in size to account for the antenna
  • They are more expensive
  • They require more power, which usually means the battery will not last as long

I simply don't know where to go to find the location of the cat. She usually goes within my block and it would be nice to go near her to retrieve her. When I got the Air Tag, I put it close to my cell phone and it showed a map and location. Then two weeks went by and the cat was in the house. Today, she escaped and I don't know where to go to look for her. Maps? Icloud?
