Issue with Terminal: Unable to Run Commands

Whenever I open the terminal, all I see is the following message:

Last login: Wed Aug 7 22:21:06 on ttys000

After this message appears, the terminal does not allow me to run any commands. I am unable to use the terminal at all.

Steps Taken So Far:

  1. Restarted the terminal.
  2. Restarted the computer.
  3. Checked for updates.

Could someone please help me troubleshoot and fix this issue so that I can use the terminal again?

I understand no command prompt appears when opening the Terminal app. First please try the simple step of hitting ^C (control C) in an attempt to terminate whatever login shell may be running.

If that restores the command prompt, but subsequently opening a new Terminal window results in the same problem, investigate Terminal's settings or preferences. Specifically, those under the Profiles tab > Shell. Also investigate the settings under the General tab.
