Colour Correcting Skin following the Line in Hue/Saturation Curves gives me bizarre results ??

Hi Guys,

So I am trying to colour correct skin of the subject in a video and when I go to Vectorscope this what it shows so I am trying to align the white part in the circle to the line in the cirecle. And to do so I go to the video Inspector than Hue and Saturation Curves and in that I go to Hue vs Hue and then elect the dropper then select an area o the skin it gives me yellow and red colour curves to play with and when I make the adjustment and align it to the line in the circle it gives me a bizarre skin tone on the subject.

What do I do ? If I follow the line and make the adjustments it misgiving me a bizarre looking skin.

Please check the attached screenshots.

Q1: What is the detailed media information?

Q2: What are the project settings?

Q3: Did you adjust the WB using the white wall in the background?

Q4: Crop to display only the skin →How much difference is there between the vectorscope line and the skin color?

The original skin color is within the range that does not need to be corrected. Why do you want to correct it?

Yes the entire face becomes excessively Red if I try to align the colours to the Skin Line in the Vectorscope. I don't think it is a issue with Monitor if I follow the skin line and try to align the colours with that line the end result is not pleasing.

Also right now when I am sampling an area of the skin by cropping it and going in Hue/Saturation adjustment and then going to Hue Vs Hue after I have aligned the colour to the skin line in Vectorscope the moment I uncheck the Crop box the alignment goes haywire and then again the colour do not align to the skin line. It all gets jumbled up !! Why is this happening ?

I am on the latest MacOS Sonoma and also the Latest FCP version don't have the exact figures right now but yes I know it is the latest version because I just updated both if it, one today morning and the other just a couple of days back.

What I am doing is after adding the video clip to the timeline then first I do is Balance Colour then I add all the other adjustments

I go to Hue/Saturation then go to Hue and Hue pick the colour picker select the area from the forehead and it gives me a Red and a Yellow dot to play with the grapha nd then I raise the red dot on the graph and then I get this result, if I try to align the colours ditto to the Skin Line it becomes Magenta Red.

Why am I using Hue Vs Hue is because some of the YouTube videos which I saw the fastest way of colour correcting they did was go to Hue vs Hue and align the colours to the skin line, but it ain't working for me !!

Assuming the lighting is normal, no gels, not blue hour or golden hour, I wouldn't use Hue v Hue. I'd just use the Color Wheels. I usually crank up the global sat to make it easier to read the scope. Then use the adjustments on meds and highlights to line it up. Then reset the global wheel.

Hi Tom ! I am not able to follow, understand this method that you have mentioned. Like are you saying add a colour wheel and the crank up the Global Sat and then adjust Midtones and Highlights and then reset the global wheel ? why reset it ? is it because you only cranked it up so that you can play with Midtones and Highlights based on that ?

Can you please explain if possible step by step if you can? Thanks

Note- Only looking for a reply from @Tom Wolsky

Simplify it, forget about cranking up the saturation. It’s unnecessary to correcting the color. Just adjust the color with the mids and highlights.

Hi Tom,

Thought would show you as a screen recording what I am doing on the Method that you last told me about and if I am following and doing it right ?

Can you please have a look at this screen recording and tell me if this is what you meant ?

And if not, what else did you mean ?
