apple watch series 9 touch screen not working after software update

I purchased an Apple Watch Series 9 to replace my old Series 1 about 2 months ago. The watch worked great until a forced software update a week ago, I didn't realize I had auto-updates set to on. Once the software update happened, the watch battery began to rapidly deplete and the touch screen was not working properly. I re-synced the watch and deleted my previous settings. While I was able to resolve the battery drain by doing this, the touch screen was still unresponsive. A few days later, randomly, I took a shower with the watch on and suddenly the screen started working again, totally normally. Then 24 hours later, the touch screen again stopped working. The compass wasn't working either, after several restarts I got that to work, but the touch screen is still useless. I have tried cleaning the screen, it doesn't do any good.

Any ideas? Extremely frustrating that a brand new product would be so glitchy and broken. Also, another cautionary tale about Apple software updates, I've disabled auto-updates because all I want is a watch that consistently works and I have no faith anymore in Apple updates. I would almost rather my watch get hacked frankly, if it would just work properly the rest of the time.

Eventually your outdated versions will become unable to run. If you don’t have faith in the updates, why still use the products, updates make the products run. You mine as well go back to the Apple Watch Series 5, which doesn’t receive updates anymore, if that’s what makes you happy.

At this point take it into Apple for a look:

Be careful what you wish for, your device getting hacked should not be wished upon. Also you cannot blame a software update for causing issues on your watch, its supposed to make it run smoother, I suggest you turn auto-updates back on.

Right now try a force reset for your Apple Watch, it will turn your Watch off for a couple minutes, but reset it.

  • Press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown until the screen turns black and the Apple logo reappears, then release both buttons.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but please note my original post: "The compass wasn't working either, after several restarts I got that to work, but the touch screen is still useless." Forced restart does not fix the problem--and I do blame software updates, as Apple software updates invariably seem to make all my devices run worse. This is true for my MacPro, my laptop, my other laptop, my phone, and my watch. I really wish this wasn't true, but it is. I have no faith in the updates and would rather run outdated versions of Apple software that are at least stable if the updated versions make the hardware unusable.

I'm beginning to think that my Apple Watch Series 1 was only able to last for 6 years *because* it no longer qualified for software updates. Candidly, the only reason I replaced it was because the battery started to die. Some of the new Apple Watch features are nice--but not nearly as important as the touch screen working consistently.
