How to get desktop notifications from Google Calendar in Safari?

I would like to get desktop notifications from Google Calendar in Safari, but I can't make it work! Please note that I am not interested in syncing Google Calendar with the Apple Calendar app, or using a different browser. I am using an M2 MacBook with Sonoma 14.0.

Things I have tried:

  1. Checking Safari Settings under the Websites tab, and the Notifications menu item. Google Calendar does not show up as a website that has asked for permission.
  2. Checking System Settings under Notifications. There IS an entry here for "calendar.google.com" that is configured to allow notifications.
  3. Google Calendar notification settings are set to allow desktop notifications. I DO get "Alert" style notifications within the Google Calendar website. These occur regardless of if notification settings are "Desktop notifications" or "Alerts".
  4. I have checked for OS and Safari updates.
  5. I have restarted Safari and my MacBook multiple times.

I would really appreciate your support!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.0
