nix as an Alternative to brew/homebrew
I was looking into alternatives to brew and came across nix, nixpkgs for darwin ( OSX ) and was curious to know if it has traction in the community and how it compared to brew.

I have never heard of nix or nixpgks and there are far more people in the Apple Support communities using homebrew, as there are also on the web, than some obscure tool. Stick with homebrew or avoid all package managers — which is a personal choice.

Why?

Never heard of it until you mentioned it. I see a handful of people are trying it on macOS. It seems overly complicated to me.

Curious question. Maybe you could be one of the early adopters.
how it compared to brew.
No clue. I did a Google search for "nix macOS" and found some blog posts along that line.
What are you ultimately trying to accomplish? What's the "big picture"? Homebrew is certainly very popular with people who want a big bang for relatively little intellectual effort. I use package managers on Linux for those tasks that Linux is particularly good at or particularly well-supported. But I find very little overlap between those tasks and what I use macOS for.
