Photos not importing on newly copied Photos Library

I've just made a copy of my Photos Library (that is on an external Toshiba 2T) because I bought a new external SSD to use for my photos. I tried to just copy the original library by dragging it to the new HD but got an error -36. I tried to copy it 3 times and got the same error each time.

So, I followed someones advice here in the community of transferring everything manually folder by folder using the control-click feature to "Show Package Contents" and was able to copy everything without getting the -36 error again, which I thought was a little strange.

Now, the library will open and I've kept all my keywords, albums, etc. and I can export photos from the library but I cannot import new photos from my iPhone.

When I made the copy library, I compared the info from the old to the newly copied library and the number of files and the size of libraries are different. So, I'm guessing something important didn't copy like the importing function? However, when I go in and compare the folders, everything looks like it's there. However, there are tons of folders and my eyes are crossing comparing them.

Is there something I'm missing in order to get the photos to import? What can I do? I don't want to just start a new library on the new HD, I need access to all of the older photos in a timely manner.

I'm using an iMac with OS Sonoma 14.4.1 and my new external hd is a Samsung SSD T7. My iPhone is a 13 using iOS 17.5.1 and I connect the iPhone using the provided USB-c to Lightning cable from Apple that I got with my new computer this past January 2024.

Thanks for any help.

ExFAT is the root of your problem. As I said in my last reply it MUST BE APFS or OS X Extended (journaled) depending on what type of drive it is.

ExFAT will corrupt your library if it's opened on it and run. Copy it to another properly formatted volume and erase and reformat the Samsung drive. Then copy the library back to it.

Also uninstall the AVG virus app according to the developer's instructions. It is totally not needed and only uses up system resources and reduce you bank account.

How is the external drive formatted? It must be formatted APFS (SSD) or OS X Extended (journaled) for HDDs.

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Try to import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? This tells us if the problem is limited to your current library or is more wide spread.

Then open your original library and try importing to it.

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

To double down on Old Toad's suggestion, this behavior is just the sort of thing that we have seen with Photos Libraries run from ExFat drives-- it appears to work, maybe for months, and then, as corruption seeps in, the performance suddenly goes haywire. As OT said, that's "the root of your problem."

Thanks again Old Toad, I finally got it to work. I reformatted my Samsung T7 to APFS and tried to just copy my entire library over again with the same -36 error. So I retried using the folder by folder method and thankfully it seems everything is working.

I do have one issue which can be looked over but is annoying and it's a problem that I've had a few years now. I've just dealt with it. That's the computer losing focus each time I add a keyword to a photo or video. It bounces to the finder each time and I have to activate Photos again by clicking the Photos screen.

Before I switched to the new drive, I could usually add multiple keywords to any photo or video before the computer lost focus but now it's every time I add a new keyword. It used to happen (and still does - I really notice it while typing) during any task. It just happens more often now in Photos.

I did find a previous discussion about this and you answered it but is was in 2020. I've had this issue for quite a few years. I've never timed it, and it's not every 15-30 seconds like one user was experiencing but it can hamper production. It seems random.

I bought a new iMac in January (2024) and used the Time Machine feature to transfer all my files and it does the same thing with the new iMac. In the discussion you suggested downloading and installing Etrecheck. I'm wondering since it's been four years do you still recommend this or have you found what is actually causing this problem without doing that?

Thank you again for all your help, I really appreciate it. I understand if I need to start a new discussion for this finder issue, just let me know.

First, thank you for answering my question and helping me. :)

Secondly, I did a quick get info on the Samsung hd and it says ExFat formatted. So maybe that's the culprit? But it has allowed me to copy the Photos library and work from it, just not import any new photos. I would think if it wasn't compatible, I wouldn't be able to use it at all.

Next, I created the test library like you suggested and it's the same issue. I cannot import any new photos to the test library.

Then, I opened the original library that I'm trying to copy and was able to import new photos to it, albeit very slowly. (could be the hd is having issues?)

So just to test further, I had another library (how it got started I don't know, it just did it on its own earlier this year - hence why I wanted to get a new HD for my photos because I thought it might be failing) it had previously been named "library 2" and I tried to import the photos from my iPhone to it and it works.

I do run AVG on my iMac.

What do you suggest now Old Toad?
