How can I retrieve lost contacts and data on my iPhone ?
I didn’t know about backing up my phone. Everything is gone. How can I retrieve them?

No backup no data recovery.
Contact isn't part of the backup, since it is sync to whatever cloud or mail program you use, sign into said account on your device and enable contacts.
