Have been trying to do so but no luck. Only shows an alternative face id with mask for alternative appearance which cannot be made if current person from face id isn’t in question. Have stolen device protection enabled, could it be the reason? Would be really helpful to have it set up.

You can add another person to Face ID by using the Alternate Appearance setting on your iPhone. Alternate Appearance is intended as a second Face ID profile for yourself, but it will work on a second person.
I dont think Stolen Device Protection is related to that issue, have you looked around on the page for the other option without the mask?

Have you tried turning off SDP to see if it makes a difference?
Yeah but still shows only this option written in red colour
It says that an alternative appearance has already been set up. The next thing I'd suggest is disabling FaceID and starting over.
