Well the way to add more storage is by moving large libraries such as your photos, music, movie libraries to an external HD. Apple explains how to do this with the photos library in Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac, the process is the same for music and movies.

Buy yourself a high quality external HD such as an OWC Mercury Elite Pro. DO NOT buy cheap EHDs like you will find at a Walmart or Costco. Once you have moved the libraries you need to "teach" each app (such as the Photos app) where the library has been moved to, this is simple though. Just double click the library in its new location on the External Hard Disk and that will launch the app and also "teach" it where the library resides. Once you have done that with each of the libraries you have moved then simply move the old libraries to the Trash and empty the Trash!

Also, if you are not backing up the computer using Time Machine then buy 2 EHD's one for your Time Machine backup and the other for the additional storage that I have explained for you. NEVER EVER use the same External Hard Disk for backup and additional storage, why.... simple, all HD eventually die and when that occurs you will not only have lost the original data but it's backup too!! So don't be cheap, be smart!
