I tried turning off the sound and on/off buttons one at a time numerous times and even all of the buttons at once. Didn't work for me. Got frustrated and started rotating iPad around and around like changing the orientation. Did it several times one way and several times the other way and it worked for me.

Unlock the Orientation:

If you need to click something, try unlocking the orientation: Rotate the Screen on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support. Note that some apps do not permit the screen to be orientated. So, see if you get this issue when you change the orientation by 90 degrees. If not, then it is an app error. If so, then it is a hardware error, given yo do always get this issue on this part of the screen.
