I'm toying with buying an AVP, but there's a few questions I have. I don't intend to upgrade my iCloud subscription so I'm wondering if I could back up the AVP to my NAS using Time Machine, similar to how I back up my MBPs now.

Yes, I read that. So a related question, if you can’t really back it up other than iCloud, which looks like it only does settings and apps, and maybe app data - why would you need a terabyte of storage??
You can always make duplicate copies on your Mac for safe keeping.
