A name which has been in my contact list for years is suddenly gone from my list of contacts. Does this mean theyve blocked me? Or even if they did block me would their name still appear?

If one of your contacts has disappeared from your contacts list, this does not mean they blocked you. Even if they blocked you, you would still have their contact, just unable to text or call them.

Despite what you may have read on the internet, you are never given any indication that you have been blocked.
The only thing we know now is that a contact is missing. What account do you sync your contacts with? iCloud? Gmail? A work account? Next steps will vary based on that answer. Do you share an Apple ID with someone? Have you tried going to Contacts and tapping on "Lists" in the top left corner? From there, tap on "All Contacts."
