My task bar is too wide for the screen on my iMac. How do I shrink so that the black Apple and the date/time are both visible on the screen above the open window?

Sounds like you un-intentionally zoomed the screen or selected a lowered the screen resolution.
First check to to see if you have un-intentionally zoomed in the screen.

If not zoomed in, check and return to the default screen resolution.

I misspoke. It was the venue bar that was too wide for the screen. I figured out that somehow the screen resolution was changed. selected a different resolution in Display in System Settings, and the width of the Menu Bar from black Apple to the time was visible.

That was why my second suggestion, was to check and return to the default screen resolution.
“Task Bar” is a MS Windows term, I think you are referring to the Dock or possibly the Menu bar. Can you clarify which??
