Hi, we are looking at replacing a couple of ten-year-old JVC GC-PX100BU cameras since we have a little money left in the budget. We film a lot of green screen skits for our annual awards party (redo games shows like the Family Feud, place employees in commercials ... stuff like that) so the cameras are mostly used for indoor filming in a chroma key environment. How do you handle the audio? I'm a firm believer that the audio is just as important as the video. We use a couple external mics plugged into the cameras and they provide amazing audio when compared to the camera's internal mic.
Assuming a budget similar to what you probably paid for your GC-PX100BU back in the day, the Canon Vixia HF G70 UHD would be a decent choice. It has a stereo mic/line audio input. The JVC GY-HM170UA is a bit higher priced but it includes 2 built-in XLR mic inputs + stereo audio input.
We use iPhones, no issues, as long as your subjects are at least 10 feet way from the screen, are back lit, and the screen is stretched and evenly lit. Way more matters than the camera you're using.
Try using an external recorder like Zoom and syncing in FCP. Make sure both devices are using the same audio sample rate.
