You might consider using the free LibreOffice instead of Office 365. It supports the same file formats as Office (doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx).

No your MacBook isn't going to get any new updates and if Microsoft Office doesn't support it, nothing else will. At this point your only option to buy a new MacBook. You can see the list of the supported laptops for the latest OS here:
