Trying to upgrade from Mojave 10.14.6, but request fails

I have an 2019 iMac, running Mojave 10.14.6, trying (finally) to upgrade to Sonoma, but when I try to do a software update, I get the message that "The request timed out. An error occurred while installing the selected updates." I've done this several times, but times out every time.

Do I need to upgrade to an older OS than Sonoma first? How do I do that?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.14

Backup as usual. Remember that your old 32-bit apps no longer work in Sonoma. Verify that the internal disk indeed is APFS (unlikely, but sometimes it stubbornly is MacOS Extended even in Mojave), and that it has at least ~50 GB free space. Then download full Sonoma installer and apply it to the internal disk. If that fails, try again in safe mode. If that fails, make a bootable Sonoma USB installer, Option-boot to it, and try again.
