Can someone explain why connecting my notes to my iCloud has overridden all previous notes on my phone

Today I decided to link my phone's notes with my iCloud, as soon as I did that I checked to see if my notes were in the cloud to find nothing but old notes. I go into the notes on my phone to find all my old notes from years ago replacing all the new ones I made. Also no they weren't deleted or on a separate account they were just gone with 0 traces of them and I don't know what to do or what I even can do, If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
