The Apple AirTags rely on two things:
- Bluetooth
- The Apple Find My network. This networks consists of literally millions of iPhones.
Basically, in order to get updated tag location updates, the following must occur:
- The AirTag broadcasts a Bluetooth beacon, every 3-5 mins that includes an encrypted tag ID.
- Any iPhone, with an active Internet connection, that is within Bluetooth range (~30-40'), can receive these broadcasts.
- When received, the iPhone can relay both the tag's ID & the phone's GPS location to the Apple servers over the Internet.
- This is where you would see the location updates with the Find My app on your iPhone.
Some of the reasons you are not getting updates are:
- No other iPhone was nearby or all are turned off. The latter is typical at a school.
- The tag started to beep. They will when separated from their host iPhone for a certain length of time. This is by design as a anti-stalking feature by Apple. Someone could then remove the tag's battery.
It's important to understand, regardless of any 3rd-party marketing hype, AirTags are NOT designed for tracking a moving object. Be that object a person or a pet. Numerous people do, and then post here complaining that it doesn't work. Just saying.
If you want to know your child's location, and I totally understand why you want to, you should consider either of the the following ... both are based on GPS technology:
- Providing them with an iPhone. Yes, I understand that your child is in Pre-K.
- Use a dedicated GPS tracking device. There are a number of manufacturers that provide these ... typically for pets.
