Is it possible to direct audio output to headphones connected via a USB-C port?

On my previous iMac, I was able to connect my headphones via the 3.5mm jack. However, my new iMac only has USB-C ports. Is there a way to route the sound output through the USB ports?

Thank you for your help.

Short answer: Yes!

A bit longer answer: You have a few choices to make this work:

  • USB-C to 3.5mm Adapter: The simplest solution is to just use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. Apple and other manufacturers offer these adapters, which allow you to connect your existing headphones directly to the USB-C port.
  • USB-C Audio Interface: If you want more control over your audio or have other audio needs, you should consider using a USB-C audio interface. These devices allow you to connect not only headphones but also microphones, speakers, and other audio gear.
