Frequently iMac will not allow login
iMac log in problem. Will not accept password. I switch off/on and OK till problem repeats 1-2 days later. Have run Disk Repair with/without ext HDs connected

Startup in Safe mode, then normal boot could solve your issue, also if your iMac has intel processor, resetting NVRAM as well as SMC could solve your issue.
