iMac Running Very Slow After Update

My Mac (21.5" Intel) is running painfully slow after it automatically update to Sonoma 14.6.1, today. It updated without my concurrence! This seems to be a chronic thing after each update, and is getting worse every time. Why? Is there something I could/should do to mitigate this, short of purchasing a new desktop?

Part 1 of 2

Safe Boot does not delete any of your personal files or setting

Restart in Safe Mode.

This will automatically perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts.

The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Part 2 of 2

So depending on the computer specific configurations

It is possible the machine has an ALL SSD drive or a Combo / SSD / Rotational ( Fusion ) drive

To help expedite matters and avoid a question / answer, question / answer etc.

Download the Application Etrecheck  ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

The Application is Not a " Silver Bullet "  and is  only a tool to examine the Hardware / Software used on this computer

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer Hardware / Software used on this computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

Have you shut down and restarted the Mac more than once since the update....

If so—

A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

No resolve— How much free storage space do you have(?) Macs like to have 15%-20% free storage at all times.

BTW, I am also having a problem with Time Machine backups since the latest update to Sonoma 14.6.1. Time Machine appears to display that my backups, that were done prior to the OS update, are still there. But it doesn't let me open any of those so that I can recover certain file(s). All I get is the perpetually spinning pinwheel!

I recall having very similar problems after the Mac update I had initiated several months ago, prior to this one. It took too much time and effort for me to sort out the resulting mess to my Mac. Mac updates are beginning to be something to fear, and make me want to forego any and all future updates. BTW, the latest update to 14.6.1 happened automatically, without me agreeing to it beforehand. I had intended to initiate it myself, but it just went ahead and did it anyway, without me. And when it finally finished, the last reboot it did to my Mac ran for so very long that I was tempted to interrupt it, but I didn't. It eventually brought up the home screen, and all, but with flaws in it. In retrospect, that was an omen to the problems I'm now as I'm having to get my Mac back to normal.

Which brings me back to addressing your latest response (that I think the Time Machine problem is now likely also a part of, in the context of the problems with the OS update.)

  • I have done 2 reboots since the update, and possibly more.

  • Does the SafeBoot delete any of my personal data and/or personal Mac settings?

  • You say "Does a quick disk repair before ....". Are you saying that SafeBoot does

all this stuff? Or was "Does" a typo, and you actually meant that I do the SafeBoot and quick disk repair, etc., myself?

  • I have 44% free storage space on my Mac's main drive.

Please advise.
