Is there a better way to delete downloads than one by one? Is there a way to open the folder and select multiple documents to delete?

You can do that in the Downloads folder the same way you can do it in any other folder. Open the folder, click on the top document, scroll to the bottom, hold the shift key down and click on the last document. You can then drag them all to the trash or control click and then click "Move to Trash."

Note that you can use shift click to select any range (not just first to last) and that you can use command click to elect individual documents that are not next to each other.
