*app* is damaged and can’t be opened. Delete *app* and download it again from the App Store.

So I tried opening Sim City 4 Delux Edition today after updating to 14.6.1. I got a pop up error stating “SimCity™4 Deluxe Edition” is damaged and can’t be opened. Delete “SimCity™4 Deluxe Edition” and download it again from the App Store."

First I opened the app store and found Sim City 4. It had the "Open" button so I tried opening the game from there but got the same error. I then moved the app to the trash (did NOT delete) and the app store switched the "Open" button to "$24.99". I own the game, I don't need to buy it again!

Things I tried:

  • Restarting the mac.
  • opening the game using it's exec file in it's package contents folders. See below for what that brought up! It makes no sense to me. I'm not good with code.

  • In system settings/Privacy and Security/Security/ Allow applications downloaded from ... I checked the Anywhere button.

I also tried this from an older post but no luck either ... "XYZ Is Damaged and Can’t Be Opened. You … - Apple Community

Any ideas? I'm not buying it again. At least not through the app store. Also, don't tell me to buy a windows PC.

Ahhh ok. I see what I did. SO, turns out I had bought Sim City with an older Apple ID so I couldn't redownload it when logged in with my current Apple ID. The old one was from 10 years ago or so when I had an isp email.. silly me! Anyways, I hadn't used that one in so long it was locked so I had to go through all the 'unlock account' steps.

Long story short, once I logged in with the Id I bought the game with the game launched fine. Oddly enough, I hadn't used that log in in a long time but I was able to play the game with my main (and current) Apple ID which is always signed in.

Thanks for the help. I was so close to just buying the game again on Steam.

Now, if I could only get Sim City map mods to work on a mac!
