Ad leroydouglas correctly suggests, you left out the most important part, which is what model iPhone you own. I'm going to guess you own an iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s, and you likely need a higher iOS version for apps you want to use. But iPhone 6 is a 10 year old, no longer supported iPhone, which will never be able to update past whatever the most current version of iOS 12 is. If this is your issue, then you'll need to retire your very old iPhone and buy a newer, more modern iPhone.

Do you have an iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus? If so, iOS 12 is the end of the line.

No update to iOS 13 or later for the iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus.
