Profile doesn’t load after OS update

I updated my OS to Sonoma 14.6.1 yesterday and I found that the installation hanged just before the end. I switched off the MacBook and back on again and now my profile doesn’t load. It gets stuck halfway through.

I’ve tried using disk repair first aid and reinstalling the OS (same installation problem as last time). I have a backup from June but I want to avoid using it if possible.

If it boots into Safe Mode, that would indicate some third-party system modification is blocking startup.

If you have any installed, uninstall them following the developer's instructions or use their uninstaller.

Safe Mode will run a disk check, clear some system caches, and block some things from loading including all third-party system modifications. If you can restart normally, then it was probably a corrupt cache. If you cannot, then you need to figure out what you have installed and uninstall it. It could be not compatible with the os update or may just need to be reinstalled.

I know you said you’d observe silently but Barney’s not responding to my latest message.

I do sleep, and have to take care of chores around the house.

I think you are stuck with erasing all content and settings, then try to restart. If it comes up, you can migrate from your backup.

If it doesn't restart to the setup assistant, you'll have to erase the System Volume and reinstall macOS.

How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

That is the reinstall article, but there are links to what to do if reinstalling from Recovery doesn't work including erasing the disk.

If you have an Apple Store nearby, make an appointment at the Genius Bar to see if they can get it going without losing your data.

User question " Profile doesn’t load after OS update "

Use configuration profiles to standardize settings on Mac computers

Use configuration profiles to standardize settings on Mac computers

" Remove a configuration profile from your Mac

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Privacy and Security  in the sidebar, then click Profiles on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Select a profile in the Profiles list, then click the Remove button .

When you remove a profile, all of its settings and information are deleted. For example, if the profile set up your email account, removing the profile deletes the account information from your Mac.

If you can’t remove a configuration profile, ask for help from the person who provided the profile. "

Ok. I did mention I already tried reinstalling macOS? I can try again, sure. Do you know why it keeps hanging at the very end? I leave it for a few hours like that and it doesn’t move.

The suggestion to try a 2nd installation can from from elsewhere

So again, shall observe silently

Hi.

I know you said you’d observe silently but Barney’s not responding to my latest message.

I’ve tried reinstalling the OS a second time but I have the same problem - that is that the installation is hanging at the end.

I clicked the link for reviving the OS but I’m not getting any of the warning signs listed in that link. Is that still your recommended next step? I don’t if you saw my last message but the account would also not load in Safe Mode.

Thanks.
