Recently purchased an iPad Pro M4 I want to connect it to my MacbookPro which is 12 year old; yes it’s a dinosaur, but I love it. Basically, when I’m on the road I want to access all my files currently stored on my MacBook Pro

Turn on iCloud Drive on both devices. You Mac & iPad will sync all files in the iCloud Drive folder; if you also turn on the Desktop & Documents option of iCloud Drive on the Mac, all of the documents in those folders will sync as well.
Separately (not part of iCloud Drive), you can also choose to sync other data via iCloud such as iCloud Photos, contacts, Notes, Reminders, etc.
