Future proof Apple charger (and why they do not have PPS)?
Hello,
As we know, Apple does not provide chargers with iPhones and iPads anymore in vast majority of countries. They explain that this is driven by ecology (among other things) to limit electronic waste.
I have currently few Apple 30W chargers at home for my family. Let's assume for a moment that new iPhone's 16 (at least Pro) allow for faster charging using 40W max power. In order to benefit from that, I will have to replace ma 30W chargers and buy new ones, which produces electronic garbage ;) and makes me spent quite a lot of money for new chargers set.
I thought that maybe I will try to be future proof (for at least few years) and I will buy more powerful chargers e.g. Apple 70W chargers. They are GaN, so more compact when we compare the power and overall shall have a margin of power for next years assuming that every year, the max. power we can charge iPhones increases.
But we come to my question. As far as I know, none of Apple chargers supports PPS, which limits each charger to some number of charging profiles (V/A). What do you think? Will Apple designs new iPhones so that they can utilise charging profiles of existing chargers over time or they will create a new charging profile e.g. for iPhone 16 or 17 which does not allow to charge the phone with max. power even if wattage says it should? Can you advise, maybe looking at existing products?
Moreover, any idea why Apple does not implement PPS which - according to my best knowledge - would void above concerns? If PPS was implemented, the device could negotiate with the charger whatever max. V/A is allowed by the device up to charger max wattage.
