Check if the Model number on the AirPods Max is correct, and if their serial number is listed online.

If, when connected, it doesn't appear in iPhone Bluetooth Settings, you can find. the model number on the first line of the text printed underneath the left cushion of your AirPods Max, on the original receipt, and on the original packing.

Identify your AirPods - Apple Support

Eg: says:

AirPods Max: Model number: A2096 : Year introduced: 2020
