I have Shazam in my quick access pull down menu and used it once on a song I knew already which proved it works, but now when I use it that same song plays every time. It shows the Apple music popup at the top of the screen. (I don't have Apple music installed).
Do I need Apple music installed for shazam to work properly again?

Quick access pull down menu? Do you mean the Control Center? If so, that's a shortcut to the Shazam app. It doesn't have a lot to do with Apple Music.
Try force quitting the Shazam app.

I don't have the shazam app installed either, it seems to be built into iphones now.
