When I finish a sentence and hit the period it puts a space between the last letter and the period. How can I fix this?

That should not happen. Check your Keyboard settings for "text replacements". You might find something in it you don't want:

Try this - rather than hitting the period, try tapping the space bar twice immediately after typing the last letter of the last word in the sentence. It will place the period and move your cursor up a space.
