My technology person has helped me find a workaround. I read something about "Incognito" in some of the other responses. I had no clue as to what this meant. He showed me that if you use "Chrome", click on the file tab (drop-down menu at the top). You should see a choice to open "New Incognito Window". This will open another browser session "incognito". In that mode, if you open your Google Classroom, then you should be able to view these documents. It is frustrating that Apple and Chrome have such a war over their products that the consumers are the victims.
FWIW, I think your frustration is misdirected. Apps such as Chrome and Classroom, need to conform to the platform on which they are being deployed not the other way around. Your argument would indicate that Apple must conform to Microsoft Office, or that Microsoft must conform to Firefox or Apple's Pages.
